Julie Posey spent a decade of her life as a tireless advocate for the protection of children from sexual abuse. Her mission was to bring about justice in the lives of potential victims. Her efforts did put over 100 dangerous predators behind bars - at least for a little while. At least 1/3rd of them have already re-offended and are going back through the justice system for the 2nd or 3rd times.
Posey knows all too well what it is like to become the victim of a child sexual predator and these unfortunate events in her life have been the motivation behind the work she did as a very successful Cyber Crime Fighter.
When Posey was an 11-year-old girl growing up in Colorado, her family never thought they had to worry about sex offenders and child molesters in their neighborhood. Unfortunately there was one neighbor that was so skilled at hiding the fact that he was a child molester that Posey’s parents, the other neighbors, and even the family’s closest friends had no idea that Julie Posey was hiding the guilt, shame and pain of sexual abuse deep inside her young soul. This sexual predator was so good at his grooming techniques that he was able to convince Posey to keep her silence for nearly two decades.
Since 1996, Julie Posey’s message has been emphasized in almost every major newspaper in the US including the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Houston Chronicle, Denver Post and more. Newspapers in Israel, Canada, Japan and Brazil have also carried the stories about her work.
The story of Posey’s quest to bring sexual predators to justice has been featured in such magazines as Teen People, Glamour, Time and Newsweek.
She has made personal appearances on The View, Montel Williams, CNN and many other major networks.
The story of Posey’s life and work has been dramatized in the July 21, 2003 Lifetime TV movie, Defending Our Kids: The Julie Posey Story. Immediately following the movie, victims of sexual abuse began contacting Posey for help in reporting sexual abuse, requesting healing resources and congratulating her on her part in putting numerous sexual predators behind bars.
In January 2005, Posey broke her silence and told the world her personal story in the release of My Life as a Cyber Crime Fighter. Posey says, “One of the best ways to feel empowered is to take back the control of your life and that’s exactly what I felt after writing the most intimate details of the victimization that I endured as a little girl and put it into a book.”
Posey had yet another mission in her life that was very near and dear to her. The sexual abuse she endured at the mercy of her neighbor also resulted in the birth of a baby boy. She was absolutely unable to take care of him herself and made the difficult decision to place him for adoption. For 24 years, she wondered about how her son was and if he’d had the life she’d hoped for him to have. Without even the name of her birthson, it was nearly impossible to find him. Although the odds were not in her favor, Posey never gave up and in August 2006, she found the man she had once given up for adoption. “It felt so incredible to finally find that tiny needle in a haystack,” Posey said.
In 2007, Posey and her birth son were reunited for the very first time on the Montel Williams show. “I can’t even tell you how emotional that was.” Posey said.
It is Julie Posey’s most sincere hope that by sharing her story, she can prevent child sexual abuse and encourage the survivors to heal.
